Lately I've been finding it more like work to want to go out and interact with people through social media tools like Twitter and Facebook.

The main reason for this is that I am constantly being bombarded with people "Friending me" and forcing the one way conversation of their latest pitch, product, blog, and etcetera. Don't get me wrong I'm all for getting your message out there, but when you make it a one way conversation on a two lane road...you force more eyes away from your intention than on.

I'm working harder to fend off those pushy advances of

"Get more followers on Twitter [insert link here]" ~ Honestly, I may not have a lot of people that I follow or follow in return, in comparison to some, but I like the personal connections I have.

"Loose weight now with my latest product [insert product and link here]" ~ This just makes a large man, like myself, really self conscious...and put down my fast food.

And a laundry list of others, I'm sure you get as well, that just turn me off to wanting to return to being fully active in my community.

Here's a question, for those of you on inSocialMedia.com, how do you combat Social Media Fatigue?

Hi Michael,

Great post. I'm with you. When I started using Twitter I would send each new follower a personal message thanking them for following and asking a question or making a comment about interests we may share. I quickly got overloaded and it was not feasible to do this for every follower. Now, I choose not to follow people who tweet with self-promotional information especially if it looks like they are auto-tweets. This takes a little more time in going through new followers, but in the end I find that the people I connect with are relevant and more open to two-way conversations. I also un-follow people when I see this trend that I may not have recognized early on. Eventually, these people will un-follow you because you didn't follow them back. I'm okay with that. I'm a quality over quantity kind of girl. I want to connect with people who put thought into their tweets and inspire and deliver responses to their followers. And I still send a DM to those with relevant common interests that I want to dialogue with.

I've also been using Seesmic Desktop to create groups. I've broken them into categories like: thought leaders, companies, and friends. Friends are people that I've had a dialogue with previously. I like Seesmic because I can do it on the fly as tweets come in and don't have to stop and organize all my followers at once.

This helps me prioritize my time when I log in. Which by the way, I'm generally always logged in. It just determines if I stop what I'm doing to take a quick peek or wait until I decide I want to look.

That's how I've been doing it. I'm really interested in hearing thoughts from others.

Good post Michael. We are on the same track. I wrote something recently even using the same word, "fatigue." It's a good word for what's happening.
