Comment by Paul Hellard on February 11, 2009 at 2:21am - A bit of background to that shot is that the koala was so desparate for water that it accepted a drink, then a dip from a family outside Geelong in late January. We had 46C (115F) here outside Melbourne on Saturday, after a week of over 40C. Then some terrifying firestorms rolled across that destroyed countless towns, killed 183 (so far) and has shaken Australia as deep as a Katrina storm or a Chengdu earthquake. I am 10km from the front, but Saturday it was very much closer. Now, back on topic, Twitter, Facebook and other social media have suddenly risen to become a very useful and powerful utilities for people needing quick news and comms from the seat of the blaze. Follow #bushfire on Twitter and you are 'there'.
