E-mail and IM have different and equally valid uses. When you communicate with people who have schedules that differ from yours e-mail is indispensable.

I'm not sure, but I think it's likely that once social media matures, all departments in a company will use the social media tools that are appropriate for them, just as they use e-mail now and once used fax machines, human messengers and postal services.
