How can we run State & Local level election campaigns using social media? What can we learn from David Plouffe (Obama's campaign manager)?

I will post updates as I learn / find tidbits. Please join the discussion. Looking forward to sharing some insights.

Hi! I'm new here but wanted to introduce myself. A friend is actually going ot be running for state office here in Georgia, so this really interest me. There is a person that has studied Obama's campaign and has written a book on the strategy used with social media - will have to go back through my research notes and find the link. Would be perfect for this topic.

Hi Joe,

Thank you for joining the group and for the info. I am helping a friend who is a current School Board Member run for Virginia House of Delegates. And, in fact, am attending a seminar tonight on how to use Twitter for campaigning. I will type up some notes tomorrow and post them here tomorrow (Friday, 3/6).

Also, you might be interested in checking out an event that I added here -- http://www.insocialmedia.com/events/digital-marketing-world - David Plouffe is the keynote. The event is virtual and free. Check it out.

"For those of us who had been Obama supporters and received dozens, if not hundreds of e-mails throughout the campaign from David Plouffe, you came away with the feeling that you knew this guy and wanted to know more," Viking President Clara Ferraro told the AP. "His e-mails were very motivating and sincere. I would read one of them and think, `This campaign is so smart.'

This from a report that Obama campaign manager David Plouffe has agreed to a seven-figure deal to write a book about last year's presidential election. ...

So, you already have a LinkedIn page and Facebook page for your candidate and you've secured a twitter account. Now what? I am trying to put together some ideas on how to apply a strategy to the process.

1) Add Google Alerts for your Candidate and their Opponent and the position as well.
2) Use Twitter to follow political news groups in your area as well as to announce your candidates position and any meetings that they will be attending.
3) Start a Local MeetUp.com group to promote your candidate's cause
4). Create a LinkedIn group also to promote your candidate.
5). Build a Squidoo Lens for your candidate and perhaps another one for the specific election/position.

Other ideas? I would love to hear your thoughts/suggestions.

Hello Jill,

I think your ideas are great. I would like to offer the following as strategic efforts during a campaign:

1. Build a system to increase influence on Twitter
2. Reach out to local/state influencers who have large social capital
3. Build an online audience for webinars, Ustream sessions (interactive)

Let's keep the list going.
