Wordpress for Online Networkers - Questions and Answers

Building a Wordpress blog (on your own server, not on Wordpress.com) takes work and dedication, but it's well worth the effort. Your blog connects you to your target audience in the most personal way possible - by informing and engaging. While content is still the regining king, the way that content is presented is also very important. Your Wordpress blog has to look great and function well in order for you to retain a substantial readership. In essence, your goal as an online networker should be to create some sort of 'experience' with your blog that will keep people coming back and build your credibility. Creating and maintaining a successful blog can be difficult without some technical support - which is why this group was created.

Wordpressalicious is my Wordpress support blog for non-geeks who need themes, tips, hacks, and help in easy-to-understand language. This group on inSocialMedia is a hub for those who want to know and those in the know - we can mix, mingle, learn, and grow together.

Welcome, and feel free to start a discussion if you have a question :-)

To your continued success,

I.C. Jackson

Hi, I just joined the group because it seemed so timely.
I have been working with Wordpress for years, and have watched it blossom into the world class web 2.0 platform that it is.

Recently I decided to delve deeper into the heart of it, namely the code. While I'm no stranger to PHP, an expert I am not. So I figured what better way to learn PHP than through Wordpress! Then last week I thought why not keep track of my progress in a blog where I can maybe make new friends in high places?

So I did and I am. Watch me start out by developing a Wordpress theme @ my NorthBeachNetworks website

I hope to drop in here often and get active. Good idea I.C.

Looking forward to reading that. I didn't know you could host WP on your own server. Do you have to install something from WP on your computer to have that work? Just so you know your "About Us" link at the bottom of your page takes me to a "Error 404 - Not Found".

Hi Doug,

Like Harley said, hosting your Wordpress site locally on your own server is MUCH better than using a Wordpress blog on wordpress.com. You get full creative control without paying astronomical fees - nothing above and beyond your web hosting package. Wordpress is such a great platform because of how much customization you can do. Stay tuned to the Wordpressalicious blog, as we will be exploring more on DIY Wordpress customization very soon :-)

I've been thinking of trying WP for my new design business site. The only thing that has been stopping me is that I can't really customize like I can on Blogger. At least not that I am aware of anyway. I have a free blog there, but I can't even get into the code of it without paying. Seems a shame really.

Nice, I.C.! I'm also a big fan of Wordpress, and I agree that hosting it locally is the way to go. Here's a blog site I built for a client that actually outranks their main site on a lot of keywords: http://blog.thedrakecenter.com/
